Dutch national railway (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) along with two partners, Service2Media and Appear, have recently launched the so called Reisplanner Xtra, which is the first implementation of wireless context-aware services for Dutch train travelers.
Reisplanner Xtra is a travel planner app that uses current location information to offer customised services based on user context, previous journeys, and preferred or recently visited stations. As a result, the application can display various information regarding the station and local points of interest to those who opt-in to use it. Moreover, to make the railway service more comfortable for the end users, Reisplanner Xtra monitors possible changes to a planned journey and alerts users to these changes by SMS.
Commenting on the new service launch, the railway’s Corine van Drunen said: “The growing market penetration of smartphones opens up new possibilities for bringing a better service to our travelers. We believe Reisplanner Xtra will be the mobile channel of the future for Nederlandse Spoorwegen.”
