Telefonica Deutschland and O2 join forces

Telefónica Deutschland and O2 (NYSE: TEF) now plan to bundle their business-to-business activities and the operation of their mobile communications and landline infrastructures under the common name of Telefónica O2 Germany. With the new business division and the consolidation of the two network infrastructures, the company is setting its course for a future with further growth and convergent offers.

The newly created business division combines the sales and marketing of the business customer offers for small, medium-sized and multinational companies as well as the landline wholesale business, making it a second important mainstay in addition to the O2 consumer business. The new organization offers O2 the opportunity of actively pushing ahead with its strategy for integrated telecommunications. This will also be supported by the consolidation of mobile communications and landlines, the two network areas.

Andrea Folgueiras points out that the restructuring process will create new synergies. “The most important basis is our state-of-the-art IP-based landline and wireless infrastructure. Thanks to the new constellation, we will be able to advance with the merger of these two infrastructures even more quickly than before.” The Verl location will be expanded to become a competence center for landline and IP.

Makes a lot sense doesn’t it – convergence on the infrastructure side has meant that commonalities can be shared across the fixed line and Mobile networks. O2 is already a big-hitter in the Mobile space, and the economies of a joined operation could see it push further ahead quickly.
