HTC Touch Pro lands on U.S. Cellular

HTC Touch Pro

In a move that surprised no one, U.S. Cellular has launched the HTC Touch Pro, offering it for $249.95 on a two-year contract, after mail-in rebate. It’s a great thing to see smaller carriers catching on with the smartphone revolution, although I would be even more delighted if this had happened a year ago. The HTC Touch Pro2 will be launched within a month or so, and will make the current model look kinda old school-ish. This is not to say the Touch Pro is not a capable device. Quite the contrary, the Windows Mobile 6.1-powered smartphone has everything a business user could possibly need — including the full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, HSDPA support, 3.2 megapixel camera, VGA touchscreen, lots of operating memory (RAM), microSD memory card slot, and that cool-lookin’ TouchFLO 3D user interface running on top of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s OS. In a nutshell, it’s one of the most powerful smartphones available on the market at the moment, and for $250 it’s a great buy!

Hmmm…this phone has been available since last year, unless the date this article was posted is incorrect. I can’t comment on the Sprint version, but have the Verizon model in hand and it is a visual and mechanical piece of crap. Comparing it to the Samsung Omnia (also in hand) the build quality is an exact opposite on every level. So where you got:

“lots of operating memory (RAM)” maybe compared to a Casio G-shock watch
“cool-lookin’ TouchFLO 3D user interface” runs like a hog – in fact the only way to get the phone to operate like a “business” phone is to disable TouchFlo
“one of the most powerful smartphones available” if you are smokin crack – go to Wikipedia of all places and pull up the specs on this phone compared to almost any other smartphone

is wonder to almost anyone who has been exposed to smartphones for at least few months. CNET did a video review slamming this phone and they are usually liberal with their reviews. Jeesh. Where do you folks get your information?

“lots of operating memory” – it has 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM. No other phone on the market has more than that.
In that sense and since Snapdragon phones are still NOT on the market, the 500MHz+ CPU IS one of the fastest.
I do admit Windows Mobile may be the problem, but that’s another story.

I have the HTC Touch Pro from U.S. Cellular and I have to agree that it is a piece of crap. I wanted sooo bad to like this phone. U.S. Cellular is way behind the times when it comes to smartphones. I’ve had this phone for 3 weeks now and I’m already on my second one because I had so much trouble with the first one. I’ve had even more trouble with this one. I’m charging it twice a day because the battery keeps dying even though I have wi-fi and bluetooth shut off. It constantly freezes. The last time it froze I lost the Touch 3D interface entirely and it won’t come back. Now it will not connect to the internet and WILL NOT LET ME SEND OR RECEIVE PHONE CALLS… My contacts have been blanked out. I’ve done a hard reset and it’s still broke. Looks like I’m going to have to trade this in for a Blackberry Curve (since the Bold will not work on U.S. Cellular’s CDMA network). Very disappointed…
