As a leading GSM operator life:) is now seeking to uprate it’s network with the kind of bandwidth that (currently) only 3G can offer. According to the contract, 3000 base stations will be being put down, with the first phase starting in Western Ukraine and the Crimea. All of Huawei’s basestations will be of the newest variety – so presumably that means capable of at least 7.2Mbps downstream.

As I’ve said before, the onward march of 3G is impressive. WiFi is too localised, LTE isn’t ready – but 3G, with it’s HSPA+ variants, is giving astonishing data rates and good coverage. Now many MNOs are concentrating on in-fill of their coverage.
