India will reach 500 million users by 2012, thanks to mobile operators’ efforts to tackle the unexploited rural market.
At the moment, there are about 380 million mobile phone users in the country, and Mobile Marketing Association believes 120 million will be added in the next three years. On the similar note, MMA’s Managing Director for Asia Pacific region, Rohit Dadwal, said that with such numbers India is potentially lucrative market for mobile advertisers.
He went on to add that the global spend on marketing and advertising amounts to $500 billion, of which less than one per cent is spent on mobile marketing and advertising. “…If India accounts for just 2-3 per cent of this $500 billion, it can translate into business worth USD 10-20 billion.”
The opportunity is definitely there, hence the reason why major handset makers and mobile operators are eagerly fighting for Indian mobile consumer…
