Following my reporting on the release of the game for the iPhone a few days back now, I’ve been spending some time playing the game, having downloaded it from iTunes, for the princely sum of £1.19  :-)

First off, a brief intro – this game is probably better called Top Gun Academy, because you aren’t playing as Maverick, Goose or Ice Man – no, they are your instructors (of sorts) – or at least their cartoon representations are! Apart from this slight disappointment though, the game then leads you in to some training before real missions.

  • Controls – are pretty good actually – you have some virtual buttons on screen for strafing with your cannon, and firing missiles – and the all-important tilt control is used for maneuvering your F22 Raptor. The game is kind of “on-rails”, meaning that the landscape largely moves about by itself, leaving you to concentrate on shootin’!
  • Music/Sound – probably the best of any iPhone game I’ve played so far – why? – well it’s the music from the film, that’s why! So you’ve got the classic slow ballad instrumental music, and the “Danger Zone” music – schweet!
  • Enjoyment factor – good again – I have very little time generally, and I’ve found that I can dip in to it as and when I want – and for me, that’s got to the point of an iPhone game!

Overall then, the score is a whacking 5 stars – largely on the basis that there is a good wadge of fun to be had, and for a bargain price. More games like this please!
