New iPhone icon shows up in iPhone OS 3.0 beta SDK!

We have yet to hear a peep out of Cupertino regarding Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s upcoming iPhone 3G successor, but that doesn’t mean the iPhone maker isn’t hard at work on the next-generation iPhone. Many expect the new iPhone to sport more capable internals – like an uprated battery, better camera, faster processor and more memory. But, the new iPhone may look a lot like the current-generation iPhone 3G. A new-found iPhone icon, buried inside the iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 SDK, shows a new “iPhone 2,1″ that bears a striking cosmetic resemblance to the iPhone 3G’s beveled exterior.

The discovery of the iPhone 2,1 icon in the latest iPhone OS 3.0 beta confirms that Apple is indeed working on a new iPhone. The iPhone 2,1 hardware code had been spotted earlier this year in an iPhone OS beta, hinting that a major iPhone hardware refresh was coming down the pipeline. Unfortunately, there’s no icon for a second new iPhone, as had been suggested by the appearance of two distinct iPhone hardware codes.

In any case, the iPhone 2,1 icon doesn’t necessarily mean Apple will reveal a new iPhone at WWDC 2009 next month, but it does give us hope for new iPhone goodness from Cupertino!
