Nokia Research Center

Despite recession, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) keeps investing in research and development. Their latest move involves opening of the new Nokia Research Center near the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) campus. The new Lab will be under the direction of Dr. John Shen, the same guy who heads Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, California.

Among the subjects the new NRC lab will explore is parallel computing, which includes such areas as:

  • accelerating the mobile web browser and runtime environments,
  • increasing mobile device performance while lowering power consumption in both active and idle modes, and
  • achieving seamless ubiquitous wireless connectivity and cross-domain interoperability.

For the record, Nokia Research Center has six labs in eleven locations worldwide, and it collaborates with universities and other institutes to conduct “leading-edge research.”

Full press release can be found on Nokia’s website.
