Switzerland’s telecoms regulator, ComCom, has renewed the GSM licences of Orange, Sunrise and Swisscom until the end of 2013. As a result, all GSM licences in the country will now expire at the same time, giving ComCom an opportunity to implement a reallocation of the mobile telephony frequencies which are free today or which will become free in 2013 or 2016.

The mentioned reallocation will see ComCom enabling three licensees to use the 900 MHz frequency range for 3G (WCDMA) networks. Orange will receive additional 900 MHz frequencies from Sunrise and Swisscom, while at the same time offsetting that in the 1800 MHz range (i.e. giving up portions of the frequency range to Sunrise and Swisscom).
