Orange’s blog, The Feed, often throws up interesting stories for us in Mobile-land. Take this one for instance that Orange are getting on board with Facebook:

We like using Facebook but it’s not always convenient to log onto a computer to do the profile housekeeping.

Which is why Orange’s picture messaging (MMS) and text messaging (SMS) Facebook features are pretty cool. We’ve tried them out and they’re a) super speedy and b) easy to use.

Everyone knows that one of the best thing about Facebook is the photos. Just take your snap and create a new MMS, which you send to mobile@facebook.com. If this is the first time you’ve used this service, you’ll get a message back with a confirmation code. Enter this into the mobile upload area and bingo, your photo appears in your profile.

To use the text message features on Facebook, simply send your SMS to 32665 (FBOOK on your keypad, so nice and easy to remember). Within seconds it’ll pop up in your profile. As with MMS, if this is the first time you’ve used the service you’ll get a confirmation code to input.

You can do a whole heap of profile-prowling with Facebook to SMS: status updates, scribbling on walls, sending and receiving messages, giving your pals a Poke… there’s all sorts.

You can also check it all out by heading over to Facebook.com/Mobile and get signed up there.

PS We shouldn’t forget to let you know that all your texts and picture messages are charged at the standard rate.

You could argue this is becoming increasingly standard with Mobile Operators, but I daresay there are few with the coherency to use Web 2.0 technology to inform their users about other Web 2.0 services. Thumbs-up to The Feed - you can check it out here.

Ben Robinson

Ben is a 10+ year veteran of the Mobile industry – starting his career when SMS was a still a relatively new concept for most people (!), he has now consulted on everything from bleeding-edge Mobile content, to the next-gen accessories you might view it on. As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas! He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to 'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device) isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question of why you continue to use it... His focus at IntoMobile is mainly on Mobile content, services, and infrastructure, particularly as regards the UK market – and with the occasional look at devices. Additionally, using his extensive experience in the industry, he will provide commentary on the industry at large, with regular (and hopefully thought-provoking) articles.
