Magic is in the air up north, and so is swine flu.

Simon’s back after a nasty run-in with a non-pork-related flu, and managed to rally in time to go to the Rogers’ HTC Magic and Dream launch event in Toronto. Android sure took its sweet time coming to Canada, so Will and I speculate a bit on the timing and iPhone considerations, but lots of other news went down over the last two weeks. AT&T’s ’09 lineup got completely spilled, and we run down some of the new handsets, like the BlackBerry Magnum and some frumpy-looking Nokias. Of course, the Palm Pre launches tomorrow on Sprint, and we take one last stab at how the stock situation will affect the launch, as well as consider some of the early reviews.

This week we’re giving away a year’s worth of TeleNav mobile navigation service to three lucky commenters from the U.S. – drop a line for your chance to win! Hit the jump for a full two weeks’ worth of mobile news.

Music by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, as featured on Tap Tap Revenge for the iPhone.

Simon Sage’s education largely surrounded writing, technology and online community, leading him to begin his blogging career at www.BlackBerryCool.com and to quickly discover a vibrant and active community surrounding BlackBerry and mobile technology. In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement. With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer. At IntoMobile, you can count on his posts being even-handed, well-informed and thought-out.

It looks to me (after watching the WWDC keynote video) that the iPhone is very successful in creating an eco system that goes beyond a regular cell phone. The iPhone was kind of wow at the start but the device really took of with the SDK and the app store. Now with the hardware SDK support and the new phone hardware at the next release it will be the next step and it will set the bar very high. If Apple could only solve this AT&T issue ;)
I do congratulate Palm and Sprint to a great launch weekend and we’ll see where it’s taking them. The start is promising.
