Folks from Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Labs have recently unveiled a new Android app called Places Directory. The free application lets users quickly find nearby places in categories like Restaurants, Movie Theaters, Hotels and Banks, using the phone’s built-in GPS receiver.

The idea here is to make searching for places easier than to go through Search and Maps. Simply start the application and you’ll get the list of nearby places sorted across categories within seconds. Moreover, you’ll see distance from where you are, directions how to get there, as well as rating and photos.

In a nutshell, Places Directory is a pretty simple, yet quite useful app. Look for it in the Android Market…
