Tether your iPhone 3G now!

“But,” you say, “AT&T (NYSE: T) has yet to officially support data tethering on the iPhone OS 3.0.”
That may be true, but that hasn’t stopped the fearless iPhone community from tethering their iPhone 3G’s to AT&T’s data network for free! Thanks to the widely available iPhone 3.0 OS GM (gold master) firmware bearing the “7a341″ designation, iPhone users can get their “tether on” without AT&T’s official blessing. We can’t tell you how or where to get your hands on the iPhone OS 3.0 GM, but a certain search engine (no, not Bing!) will probably do you right. Now that the iPhone OS 3.0 is officially official, tethering your iPhone 3G to your laptop/computer is even easier – as long as you have iPhone OS 3.0 installed on your iPhone 3G.
[Update 2]
Here is an even easier, web-based method to enable Internet Tethering on your iPhone 3G (running iPhone OS 3.0). It’s the “ridiculously easy way to enable” iPhone tethering! Of course, the below method is quite simple and works as well.
Five steps to iPhone tethering goodness (make sure you’re upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0!):
- Download this carrier settings file
- Fire up Terminal on your Mac and type:
defaults write com.apple (NSDQ: AAPL).iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE - Connect your iPhone to your Mac and fire up iTunes
- Option-Click the “Restore” button and select the .ipcc file within the .dmg (disk image) file
- Once the carrier file is installed, restart your iPhone for good measure
- Enjoy the new tethering option under “Settings”
With the iPhone OS 3.0 installed on your legit (using an offical iPhone carrier’s network) iPhone 3G, all it takes is a few button clicks and you’re off surfing AT&T (or your local carrier’s) data network through your iPhone 3G tether. We can confirm that the hack works on the iPhone 3G. Let’s hope it works just as well on the iPhone 3G S!

you dont need this kind of 3rd party tools. all you need is a providerconfig aka “mobileconfig”. for example open http://help.benm.at and download the mobileconfig for your provider and voila: tethering and mms settings available in your firmware 3.0.
open http://help.benm.at in your iPhone browser – i forgot!
And if by some chance you do this, but not all of it, your 3G s might no activate quite right. In such a case, delete your com.Apple.iTunes.plist from your Library/Preferences. Then, with a power cycle you should be okay.
There is actually an easier way to tether the iPhone 3G S with out even using any pograms other than command prompt and the IPCC file from the carrier. Check out my post and if you want to update yours with mine please just link back to it.

Thank You.
Hey this works just fine on my 8 gig 3g however since at&t is rolling out a monthly cost tethering plan, will this cost any extra money to use on my current plan or can is it just using my 3g phone connection?
Hi :
I did this and it goofed up my visual voice mail on my 3g s , how do I remove this thethering software? and then get my iphone 3 g s back to normal.
thanks
I have lost my visual email also. Please let me know if you have found a way to remove the software and advise me in very simple terms if possible. I am not very well versed in software technology.
Thanks,
Michael
If you lose video voice mail function, you car restore it by: General> Reset> Reset Internet Settings. The tethering will still work and the voice mail will work too.
The .ipcc file within the .dmg is grayed out…
The article fails to mention that iTunes cannot be open when you’re running the command in the terminal. Quit out of iTunes, then double-check your spelling of the commands, and try again. It works.
Any work around for Softbank Mobile coz I tried on my 3G 16 Gig but keep getting message saying “To enable Internet Tethering contact SoftbankMobile”…Please help!!!
will the mobileconfig file work with the iphone 3GS?
Tethering is very easy to set up. I went to http://help.benm.at/usa.php and just clicked on the AT&T logo. then you have to follow Apple’s tethering turn on process: General> Network> Internet Tethering> ON

Does anyone know if AT&T can see that you are tethering? Has anyone got a nasty note or bill from AT&T because of tethering use?
After I use the internet, either tethering or on iphone 3g, and come back later I have to turn my phone off and back on to get it internet to work. Any suggestions?
Does itunes need to be installed to enable tethering??
I’ve got everything enabled and setup as required on my iphone.
I connect the phone via USB to computer and cannot figure out how to make use of the 3G internet connection.
I’d rather not install itunes if I dont have to.
Cheers
Does tethering run up my AT&T anytime minutes?
Nope… doesnt work either. Any further thoughts?
does this work with 3.0.1
Hi all, Newbie here. Sorry if this question is stupid but I followed all the instructions and have enabled tethering. However, I connected to my laptop using usb to iphone, then checked “view wireless connections available” iphone did not appear as one of my options. If anyone can tell me what im doing wrong i would be very grateful.
How does this work if u have a pc instead of a mac?
I installed but have not yet seen the tethering option appear, even after network reset and reboot. Shows installed but just not there.
Doesn’t seem to work with iPhone OS 3.1.x; probably have to downgrade to 3.0
I made the mistake of trying this on a laptop that did not have iTunes installed on it. Once I installed iTunes 8.2 on it the modem drivers were found and it worked just fine. Thanks for posting such a great mod!
Is there anyway att could find u are tethering?, because I mean you are doing the same as on the phone, how do they know wich one you are using?
