Oman Mobile boosts 3G network to 14.4Mbps

Cellular News is reporting that Oman Mobile has announced its 3G network is going HSPA – or in simple number terms, boosting up to around 14.4Mbps! Of course, it’s quite likely that peak rates won’t oft be attained, and also that 3.5G coverage won’t be region-wide – however, those lucky enough to be in the HSPA hotspots should have access to some blisteringly fast wireless data access.

Apparently Oman Mobile’s rival, an MNO called Nawras, has already done the upgrade thing, topping off at 7.2Mbps – something which Oman are obviously looking to edge out, speed-wise.

Well HSPA is now pretty much established as the network technology of choice before going full-LTE. Companies like Huawei are blazing a trail in LTE, and then numerous vendors, including NSN and Ericsson are helping MNOs build out their NSPA network for a short-to-medium term in-fill.
