steve-jobs-boom-montageWhile there are still people queueing up for the iPhone 3G S, I’m going to start speculating about the next iPhone. Thanks to Rapid Repair, we know the processor inside the 3G S is the Samsung S5PC100. A quick Google search turns up that processor’s brochure [PDF link]. Features include:

  • Operates up to 833MHz
  • 720p multiformat codec (MFC) video engine which ensures smooth 30fps video encoding and playblack
  • Supports three types of TV out interface (NTSC/PAL/HDMI)

When all is said and done, speculation about a device a year off aside, I just want to hear what’s up with Steve. Is he OK? Seriously :-(

Stefan Constantinescu (@WhatTheBit on Twitter) has loved technology since as far back as he can remember. It started with computers, but in the past few years his passion has turned to mobile devices. As a mobile phone enthusiast who lives and breathes devices that connect to the internet, he knows he is not alone with this radical fascination of all things wireless. He is strongly opinionated and enjoys a good debate so leave comments in his posts and he’ll get back to you! Stefan began blogging as a hobby in the fall of 2006 and joined IntoMobile in the summer of 2007. Later he got a job at Nokia in March 2008, but as of June 2009 he has rejoined the IntoMobile team. He is currently based out of Helsinki, Finland.

Seriously!!! I personally believe that the success of the company is dependent upon the health of Steve Jobs… If he was in good condition, he wouldn’t have let this AT&T BS happen.

I hopeing it is or better. For now, I’m sticking with the orginal iPhone till next year. 3GS is a nice upgrade but not enough to fork over the $300. 3.0 is the one I was waiting for. So start the wish list of the iPhone 4G on ATT or maybe Verizon?.

I’m going to counter the guess that the successor to the iPhone 3GS will feature HD video recording. My fellow co-worker in the mobile industry stated that the iPhone won’t make it’s claim to fame in camera performance because
    1) Samsung/Sony Ericsson/Nokia/Sharp/etc. has all made just spectacular gains in mobile camera technology that it would be a waste of time and money to try and compete with them
    2) A better camera, or rather a proper camera, needs a large sensor and a flash and those would interfere with the minimalistic design of the iPhone.

Plus, with Apple mainly trying to dominate the American market, a market which believes that a 3MP camera with VIDEO is high-end, HD recording would cause everyone to soil their trousers and die.

I’ve used a Samsung i8510 that shoots 8Mp stills and 640×480 video in gorgeous color. Full screen video with a decent lens and sensor makes for an amazing mobile tool. HD (well, 720p) is definitely something to look forward to on any mobile.

HD WILL feature in one of the next couple of iPhones – Stefan’s astute observation re: the capability of the chip means that very little needs to change in their next hardware refresh.

The thing that might delay HD support would be the release of a Nano iPhone, and that is something that will at least have been bounced round Apple’s boardroom, because of the massive catchment for a lo-end version of the device, and the enormous sales it could generate (at the right pricepoint, which is key).

Whether HD recording comes on the next higher end device is questionable, but HD playback? To make it almost as capable as an Apple TV? Bet on it.
