BREAKING: Nokia orders netbooks and smartbooks from Quanta and Compal, first model may launch Q3

June 24 (Bloomberg) — Nokia Oyj ordered netbook computers from Quanta Computer Inc. and Compal Electronics Inc., the Commercial Times reported, without saying where it got the information.
The Quanta netbook will use Intel Corp.’s Atom chip and will go on sale in the third quarter at the earliest, the Taipei-based, Chinese-language newspaper said.
Compal will make the so-called smartbook computer for Nokia using Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) Inc.’s Snapdragon chip, the newspaper said.
Nokia is the world’s biggest mobile phone maker. Taiwan- based Quanta and Compal are the world’s two-biggest makers of laptop computers.

It seems now Nokia is entering into Netbook games with Atom. Do they have any value added or legitimacy in this space? What will be added value, beyond the brand? The targeted time frame seems pretty aggressive. Either they have a new software platform to show up, or it will be a small move with potentially damage for the following moves.
Is this Nokia’s strategy to divert attention from a failing S60 browser?
What the heck is “breaking” here? Nokia N97 contains a bomb inside or what? Use the breaking title only when it is really important for all readers. Read some Engadget dude.
I think this isn’t a great idea for Nokia. Nokia should only put all their efforts in the smartphone & multimedia phone market. How about putting more effort in developing a more appealing S60 OS? Why divert efforts to NetBooks that might not exist in a couple of years?
Nokia is good at one thing and one thing only, cell phones. Keep innovating in that field.

Nokia is trying to get into the market as it develops, thats not to say they didn’t in the other ones – but it is to say they obviously see this as another opporunity.
