One of iPhone OS 3.0s most anticipated features is its support for MMS, sometimes called pictures messages. Unfortunately, the original iPhone crowd was left out of the party. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) only enabled MMS support for iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 3GSs running the latest iPhone 3.0 OS. Today, a new jailbreak application has been released, allowing the original iPhone (2G) to rock the default MMS service!

The newly released ActivateMMS2G has been published on the Cydia jailbreak applications store. To enable native support for MMS on your iPhone 2G, simply jailbreak and install the ActivateMMS2G app. You need to add “http://cydia.alpden.com/” to your Cydia Sources.

I tried to install this and it my iphone got STUCK trying to reboot over and over again.
Finally got out of boot loop by using restoring via dfu mode! This is a strong warning, activateMMS2g has a bug in it as of 06/29/09.

  2. 13 says:

ur stupid this is only for iphone 2G not 3G or 3GS!!

  3. scott says:

I just installed this. It does not seem to have changed anything.
My text screen still looks as it did before.
Would this be becuase ATT does not have the mms activated yet?

  4. Jimbob says:

Once you have installed you need to reboot then goto:-
settings > general > Network > Cellular Data Network – you will now see MMS settings underneaths
Do a search for Iphone MMS settings #netork# and then enter these exactly.
Do another reboot (bot sure you have to but i did it for piece of mind)
hey presto you should now see a camera icon next to the text entry box when you compose a message.

  5. Tommy says:

    Same problem happened to me!
The reboot screen with Apple’s logo stays on forever!
I reset my iphone via Hold + Home Button but everytime i do that the reboot screen continues to stay on.

How’d you get out of it?? How did ANY of you guys get out of it??

  6. ibrey says:

My 2G iPhone can receive MMS with no problem but there is a small problem in sending MMS. If I take a picture or select a picture from the Camera Roll then MMS will not go through. However, if I select a picture from My Pics which are the pictures copied through iTunes then no problem its through. Do you have any idea whats going on?

  7. Mansoor says:

I did all that. Got the camera icon and everything. But mms won’t go through.

I noticed that the mms settings I enter get wiped out as soon as I exit the network settings tab. The APN and username password revert to blank. That’s probably why the mms isn’t going through. Any thoughts on why this might be happening?

  8. wwwendys says:

Reboot is very important! hold down the Power button and Home until the phone turns off. Do not use the slider to turn it off. WHen you see the slider, continue to hold the button and it will shut down. I have an unlocked and jailbroken 2G upgraded to 3.0. Carrier is Tmobile and I have the data package with texting. I have been at this all day and it works now. Cellular Data APN internet2.voicestream.com

  11. james says:

Im in the boat as levi.. Did all the above cant send or reveive.. and have correct setting under cellular data network menu.. and have the camera in the text messages.. but when i try to send, the bar goes all the way to the end and never sends..?

  12. TR404 says:

I was having a problem with the MMS APN field reseting. AIS needs “multimedia” in the MMS APN but it wouldn’t stick no matter what I tried. I found a solution that worked for me. Here is a great step by step instruction for anyone having problems with setting up MMS on a 2G iPhone firmware 3.0

    http://news.metaparadigma.de/?p=2404

In Step 2. Installing A Custom Profile, I used only “multimedia” in both APN fields and no username or password in any field.

AIS users need to send the first MMS to phone number 99099. This will activate MMS on your account.

  13. iphone2gpolice says:

hello all. I have enabled mms on my iphone 2g with one LARGE problem. ok let’s start with what i did first:
    1: jailbroken/unlocked 2g
2: update .ipcc file using itunes v 8.2 (shift + update)
3: ensure ASbattery is not installed and then download/install activatemms2g via cydia….reboot
(ensure that it allows you to reboot via cydia or it will not work)
4:download the correct att profile via safari @ unlockit.co.nz/# (US/att)
    5: reboot phone
7: under settings/general/network/cellular data network add MMSC and MMS proxy (mmsc.cingular.com and 66.209.11.32 respectively)
under settings/messaging –enable MMS to ON
    8: reboot phone
OK now here’s the weird part, only for ATT users
9: take out the sim card from the iphone and put it into another ATT phone
10: send/receive some MMS messages from that phone.
11: once this is complete, replace sim in iphone and enjoy MMS in stock app!

NOW HERE’S THE PROBLEM I’VE HAD
my MMS works for about a day, then eventually it stops working and i go back to having little exclamation points and error messages until i pull the sim card out, put it in another ATT phone again and send/receive again. This is very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.

    to widget freak

i changed my cellular data APN from internet2.voicestream.com to the wap.voicestream.com

yet now my MMS works flawlessly, yet my internet package is broken. id rather take the internet over the MMS so any ideas how to get both to work? my MMS would work perfectly fine if i could get the MMS APN to hold. but any APN i try in that category simply resets after i go back to the settings menu.

    ANYONE have any ideas????????
