Apple, iPhone and China. We have yet to see those three words frolicking in public, free of any “rumor” or “speculation” disclaimers. Today isn’t any different. The latest rumors surrounding Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s Chinese iPhone dealings indicate that a China-bound iPhone may soon be announced. This time around, the rumors are based on an alleged license application filed by the iPhone maker – which is only slightly more reliable than vaporous hearsay. We’re hearing that Apple has reportedly applied for a wireless license in China, which might very well precede an impending iPhone launch in China.
According to Wedge Partners analyst Matt Mathison, Apple recently applied for a Network Access License in China. The license application doesn’t include any references to WiFi, possibly indicating that the iPhone may be headed to China without any WiFi hardware in tow. But, WiFi or no, Apple’s application for a Network Access License could blaze a path for the iPhone to launch in the Chinese market within months.
We’ll keep a close eye on this latest Chinese iPhone rumor.
