logo-ccsinsightIndustry analysts CCS Insight have unveiled a report on what is driving the use of the mobile Internet amongst young adults in the UK today.

The report, based on a survey of more than 1,000 adults between 16 and 35 years old, offers insights into the mobile Internet habits of this technology-savvy and demanding consumer group.

Key themes to emerge from the report are:

  • Mobile Internet use is growing at a phenomenal rate; social networking is driving growth with a third of young adults regularly accessing Facebook and Twitter from their mobiles
  • Men are twice as likely as women to access the Internet through their mobile phone
  • Social networking is driving growth, with a third of young adults regularly accessing Facebook from their mobiles
  • Young adults expect mobile content – especially music and videos – to be free
  • BBC iPlayer is the service people would most like to see on their phones

Paolo Pescatore, report author and Head of Mobile Content at CCS Insight, said “The Web is revolutionising the way people use mobile phones. Forget music downloads and video – social networking is what people want. Media owners and operators will have to find new ways to make money from their assets. And it’s clear from the report that the industry could do a better job marketing to women. Some networks and phone-makers have got it right. Their rivals are leaving money on the table.”

So there you go – if you ain’t offering a social networking service, then you aren’t making the most of your mobile internet service offering apparently…

Ben is a 10+ year veteran of the Mobile industry – starting his career when SMS was a still a relatively new concept for most people (!), he has now consulted on everything from bleeding-edge Mobile content, to the next-gen accessories you might view it on. As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas! He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to 'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device) isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question of why you continue to use it... His focus at IntoMobile is mainly on Mobile content, services, and infrastructure, particularly as regards the UK market – and with the occasional look at devices.
