The Nokia Surge, which I’ve been insulting left and right due to it’s appearance, is coming to Europe and Asia during Q3 of this year for 200 EUR ($285) under a new name: 6760 Slide. The spec sheet is practically the same, the only key difference is that the 6760 Slide has a 3.2 megapixel camera according to Nokia Conversations. I’m trying to get a confirmation about that camera, just doesn’t seem right. A quick refresher of the other aspects of this device: 2.4 inch 320 x 240 pixel screen, GPS, S60 3.2, 1500 mAh battery, 3.84 x 2.28 x 0.61 inches, 4.38 ounces. What say you oh people of the internet, are you going to buy this thing or walk away slowly and pretend it never even launched?

Update: The device is on Nokia’s EU website, it confirms the device has a 3.2 megapixel camera. It will be available in three colors: black, red and white. Eric from Phone Scoop was nice enough to send me the data sheet he received from Nokia (NYSE: NOK) PR: [770 kb PDF]

    Well for 200 Eur AND 2.4 inch 320 x 240 pixel screen, GPS, S60 3.2, 1500 mAh, 3.2 Mp.

    I would buy it :)

Hell yeah Stefan!! This is what the E75 should have looked like! Of course the E75 has some more beef under the hood, but give me the same specs and I take this any day over the E75!! The form factor is great but they need to tweak the design a little and add touch to it and prolly the home screen widgets also need to find their way into it but after that it’d be an awesome device!

Okay, you’re right.. the way it is now its a whole lot of crap =D

  3. The E75 should’ve been like THIS?? Luckily, you’re not a Nokia project manager. This thing is butt, and the only attraction is it’ll be subsidized in America and cheap unlocked. Other than that, its a tragic device. Its basically a device conjured up by at&t. Nokia would’ve prefered to pass out the 6220c or E75 than this monstrosity. Congratulations, though. Now that Nokia’s pimping itself to carriers, maybe relations will improve.

  4. I just got back from the AT&T store where they had a Surge tethered to a display. When it was announced a few weeks back, I was evaluating the E75, and as I was not liking the E75’s keyboard, I was intrigued enough to actually go into an AT&T store to try it for myself.

The Surge was decent. It is all plastic, so it has a cheap feel to it, even cheaper than the 1110i I have. The Navi key on it is too small and the menu buttons are not at the corners of the screen, so the feel for using them is off. That being said, the keyboard worked well for me. It felt more natural to use than the E75, which I said in my eval of it – http://www.thehotiron.com/index.php/site/comments/my_nokia_e75_experience/ – was built for low-end users who think most keyboards are too small… or at least that’s my take on it.

Would I pay $285 for this unlocked? No, I would opt for the E72. Would I pay under $100 for it? Probably. AT&T is selling it for $79, right next to the E71x which is $99, after “rebates” and signing up for 2 years of their service.

Where I wouldn’t go as far as you did Stefan and others with regards to this device, there is much worse out there. I think Nokia is trying to compete with the other comparable devices from LG, etc. that you can get at Verizon Wireless, et. al. in the US.

    Hi Stefan!

I wouldn`t dismiss the 6760 slide only because of its looks. Sure, it is certainly not the sexiest phone ever launched, although its keypad looks quite comfortable.

At least in theory, I think it fits quite well in the Nokia portfolio. Its specs are quite good, almost complete and nearly on par with the E75. With its aggressive pricing, it fills the gap between the E63 and the E71 or E75. I can see no real competitor. Even the 5730 is way more expensive.

However, I believe that it will nevertheless do not very well. Maybe fine, but not stellar. Why? Smartphones with qwerty keyboards are quite popular nowadays. But by whome? Let`s face it, most qwerty smartphones are bought by business users. The situation may be a little different in the US and even in other areas people begin to enjoy the beauty of qwerty keyboards. But the majority buying and using these phonea are pros. And they are almost always using quite expensive contracts. So the price of a phone is of no great concern, because they are quite heavely subsidized. It doesn`t really matter to a business user if the 6760 slide costs him 10 EUR in the end, because he or she can get a E71, E75 or Blackberry maybe for some 50 EUR more. Even in times of a recession these are peanuts.

So the quite attractive pricing is of no great importance. How many people (at least outside the US) buy a qwerty smartphone without contract? Not many. Maybe some teens who are ultra-heavy into texting, but if you can get a 6700 for the same price or even less, who really cares about a qwerty keyboard…

Don`t get me wrong. If the 6760 launches at the end of the third quarter, I wouldn`t be much suprised to see it retailing for about or even under 200 EUR (incl. taxes) around christmas. I think it is a bargain at 250 EUR (incl. taxes), but a steal at 200 EUR! But I have a bad feeling that not many will care…

    Greetings Marc

    kind of interesting due to the low price, but also couple of things stood out on the Euro page;
    + Opera browser
+ latest Ovi software built in (and Facebook & Myspace?)
    – 2.5mm AV connector
