my tether palm pre 300x450 My Tether turns your Palm Pre into 3G WiFi router! The Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre has just become a bit more useful to mobile warriors around the country. Thanks to the WebOS homebrew application “My Tether,” the Palm Pre can now be used as a 3G modem for your computer. My Tether turns your Palm Pre into a 3G WiFi router that works a lot like Novatel’s MiFi 3G WiFi router (also available from Sprint).

My Tether provides an intuitive interface to help you broadcast your own personal WiFi network using your Palm Pre. Unfortunately, WebOS apps like My Tether aren’t going to be available through the App Catalog. That means you’ll have to hack your Palm Pre to give up root access. Once jailbroken, you can direct your Palm Pre to download and install the My Tether app.

My Tether works as advertised. Simply fire up the application, enable WiFi tethering, and use your portable WiFi network as you see fit.  The free version of My Tether must be installed using a bit of command-line execution. A $10 version of My Tether comes bundled with a convenient installer and features WEP encryption for the WiFi network, but still requires the user to “root” the Pre.

Head on over to Palm Pre Hacks to find out how to root your Palm Pre and install My Tether!

Cool app, but does anybody else want to shoot this guy the next time he says, “um”?

  2. Remon says:

I think that tethering your Pre violates your Sprint contract. Doesn’t that open up the possibility of Sprint terminating your service or taking other punitive measures if you are found out? I would dearly love to run this program, but I’m afraid of the consequences. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  3. tweak says:

This article is not entirely correct anymore. The Pre DOES NOT need to be rooted by the user prior to installing. It will run the Novacom process automatically, so long as the user has enabled Developer Mode. That can be done with the popular Contra code: upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart

    Cool, no?

  4. Vince says:

…and Palm will still know what you’re doing, no?

  5. michael says:

Does anyone know if this will still work with the webOS 1.2 and up?

  6. Daniel says:

The application works on my Pre and is able to be utilized with one of the computers in my home. However, my Toshiba A215 laptop — although it sees the Pre WiFi — will not connect to it. The problem is deemed unknown by the computer. I’ve disabled (I actually uninstalled it) the virus protection software to ensure that was not the problem, to no avail. All firewalls are off. Any advice out there?
