LiMo Foundation

Just when we thought it’s dead, LiMo Foundation announced new member companies – Immersion Corporation and KDDI Corporation.

The first of the two companies develops advanced haptic technologies for mobile communications, consumer electronics, gaming, and manufacturing — making us think we may actually see a LiMo-powered touchscreen handset released at some point.

As for KDDI, it’s the second largest mobile operator in Japan. The country’s number 1 and number 3 operators, NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank, are also members of the Foundation, hinting us LiMo could be a big thing in the Land of the rising Sun. As a matter of fact, yesterday we reported that 9 LiMo handsets are coming to DoCoMo.

As for the rest of the world, it’s fair to say Android will be the name of the mobile Linux game, or at least me thinks so. ;)

Dusan Belic

Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time should do. In addition to his interests in mobile phones, Dusan also loves to experiment with the latest web and mobile 2.0 services. The idea of accessing and managing your information from any device no matter where you are simply amazes him. Whether it's an online to-do list, note taking service or a video sharing social network, he's there to try it out. He admits though, he's still searching for the ultimate web-based organizational tool, which "sings" perfectly with the mobile PIM application. Dusan used to run SymbianWatch.com which later became part of IntoMobile. He lives in Serbia, South-East Europe, from where he edits the site on a daily basis.

I never hear anyone mention applications, when they talk about LiMo. These days, mobiles are the razors and apps are the razor blades.

    - Is there one common application framework, for all LiMo devices?
    - Are there plans for a LiMo app store?
    - Is it realistic to believe that app developers will want to support yet another smartphone platform?

HTC, with the Hero & soon Motorola & Sony Ericsson with their devices, are showing how flexible Android is, when it comes to tailoring a unique user experience for each vendor’s devices.

    - What advantage does LiMo bring to the table, that vendors don’t already have with Android?

Granted, if momentum for web apps continues to build, then having a great browser engine in LiMo (which supports HTML5, BONDI, WebGL, etc.), might be all that’s necessary to be a successful mobile application platform.
