Screenshot: Nokia’s Maemo 5 looks nothing like Symbian, and that’s a good thing

The screenshot below (click to enlarge) was captured by Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-Review, and was posted on his personal blog. It doesn’t reveal too much to be considered interesting. A new way to manage connections, new icons, new color scheme. This is however something we’re going to be seeing a lot more of in 2 weeks at Nokia (NYSE: NOK) World if the rumors hold true about the Finnish company launching their first mobile phone running the Linux powered Maemo 5 operating system. Oh how far we’ve come since the days of the 770 (November 2005), N800 (January 2007) and more recently the N810 (October 2007).
Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s translation of Eldar’s Russian is terrible, but we can make out a couple of things. He says this is the best device of 2009, which is a lot coming from a man who can get any phone he desires, including prototypes that have been cancelled, months in advance. He further adds S60 is obsolete junk. Take that as you will Symbian fans.

“Wrote about it in Twitter and here is the result…
One of, will make more screenies while in transit. The software is compatible . For now, I will just repeat what I have said before: it is the most impressive device of 2009. Others are, to say it lightly, not the same. Compared to this one, S60 is outdated garbage. And that is its main difference [from Maemo].
I am looking at N97 holding it in my hands and understand that.. Errr… Anyways, I will write something tomorrow evening, to make you [all] happy… While trying not to create problems for the company.
PS: After living [with this device] for a few months, I can tell that this smartphone is a wonder. And a stable, flying wonder It does lag in a few spots, but all these are expected.”
also eldar confirms that rover will be announced on september 2 and provides some info on battery life – “i used rover for several months, so standby 2 days, active use arounnd 6 hours, like video etc”
Interesting. As much as I like S60 for it’s amazing applications, i don’t mind a better UI and an OS that performs better as well. However if there aren’t many great apps available for Maemo’s OS, I’ll be sticking with my N82.
