Ireland: Competition Authority approves BT & Vodafone co-op

By Ben Robinson on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 at 12:14 PM PST In BT, Vodafone

BT and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) announced they got approval from the Irish Competition Authority for their plans, which essentially are the BT moves its customer base to Voda, and at the same time provides ‘wholesale network services’ to Voda for 7 years.
Interestingly, and perhaps not obviously, Vodafone is actually the number 2 player in the Irish fixed line broadband market, so there are clear strategic wins for both companies in the deal.
It’s looking like BT will target businesses and the public sector with their network IT services, and allow Vodafone to focus on consumers – creating a clear, yet workable, separation of the market segments they are going to target.
The line between fixed, mobile, and service operators is blurring, and we are going to see a lot more of this over the coming couple of years…
