Android isn’t just a smartphone operating system. Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s mobile OS is perfectly suited to running all kinds of web-connected devices, including mobile internet devices (MIDs). One of those devices made an appearance at IFA 2009. SMiT showed off their MID-560 Android Tablet on video and it’s looking like one mighty fine device. The SMiT Android Tablet sports a massive 4.8-inch capacitance touchscreen, 3G connectivity, WiFi, GPS and 8GB of on-board storage to meet your mobile web-surfing needs… and then some.
The SMiT Android tablet isn’t a smartphone, but with all kinds of wireless radios packed within, the MID-560 can probably do with VoIP calls in a pinch. Hit the video below to take a look at all the Androidy goods.

Given Criteria: the general rule for handhelds is that the case width is 0.55-0.60 inches wider than the screen width in portrait and for a device to be pocket size, the max case width is 3 inches for thin devices
Question: What are the screen sizes for a pocket size device (dimensions rounded off)?
Case 1: for a 480×800 pixel screen, the screen’s maximum dimensions to meet the above criteria are 2.4 x 4.0 inches (W x H) with a diagonal of 4.66 inches.
Case 2: for a 480×1280 pixel screen with pixels the same size as for case 1, the screen would have the dimensions of 2.4 x 6.4 inches with a diagonal of 6.83 inches.
Case 3: Starting with a screen having a 480×800 pixel resolution and a 3.5 inch diagonal (screens this size/resolution are currently used in handhelds), the screen dimensions are 1.8 x 3.0 inches. Expanding the screen size to meet the maximum width criteria at the same pixel size, the screen resolution could be 640 pixels (at 2.40 inches wide) by 1280 pixels (at 4.80 inches high) with a diagonal of 5.37 inches. The 9:16 pixel ratio for video could be 630×1120 pixels.
Point to be made: When can we expect 1280 pixel wide screens (in landscape) in pocket size devices (devices having a maximum landscape height of 3 inches)? Will this appear first with Android 2, Windows Mobile 7, or Maemo 6 devices?
