Opera Software, makers of the popular Opera Mini 4.2 mobile web browser, are cooking up something really big in their R&D kitchens. Opera’s browser technology is already good enough to get bundled on new smartphones like the HTC Touch Diamond2, but things are about to get even better. Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner just treated me to a preview of their upcoming announcement – and it’s a good one. Trust me, the headline will soon make sense.

If you haven’t already tried it, try Opera Mini. The latest Opera Mini brings a desktop-like browsing experience to your mobile phone (smartphones and dumbphones alike), with the option to view mobile-optimized versions of a website. The Opera Sync keeps your desktop Opera browser synchronized to your handset. Opera Mini’s Turbo feature helps speed up page-load times by processing pages server-side. The browser is light and speedy, even on older hardware. So, what else could be in store for the mobile browser space?

There are clues to Opera’s new product at opera.com/next. The teaser page prepares us for “the next generation in mobile browsing.” I’m not sure what the clues are (I don’t really care because I already know the answer), but if snooping around source code is your sort of thing, there are supposedly some little nuggets of info there.

Stay tuned!
