Sure, we have no launch date on the BlackBerry Storm 2 yet, and we really have no clue what OS the touchscreen beauty will be running. I think we’ve all assumed it would be running a variant of OS 5.0… and today, we might have some confirmation, albeit kind of rumor-ish.

The boys at BlackBerryOS have received word from a Verizon (NYSE: VZ) tipster that OS 5.0.0.212 has been approved for the Storm 2. The tipster also went on to say that Verizon dearly wants to get the device out by the end of September, but more realistically an October launch is what we’re looking at. In fact, they want to go no later than the third week in October. This makes sense, as earlier in the month we got word that the Storm 2 would be released for business users at the end of September, with a general release in Verizon stores in mid-October. Looks like everything is lining up nicely here.

So, that’s it for the Storm 2 rumors for today. OS 5.0.0.212, and a likely early-mid October release. You pumped yet?

What about the Storm 2 for AT&T? Any word as to when the 9520 will be out?

It is very nice, but it seems that Samsung Omnia HD is better, especially for the Ram. Do you know anything about that?

I don’t get why AT&T will be getting the Blackberry Odin, isn’t the Storm brand/sequel supposed to be the “iPhone Killer” I think its stupid! But oh well I think it should stick with the Big Gracefull V (verizon)

  5. John T says:

The whole argument that some people support regarding the Storm 2 as being an “iphone killer” should be laid to rest. The only way a phone should truly be labeled as competition for the iphone is if it is multimedia-driven as well. Common sense would dictate that Blackberry and its products are geared towards the business-minded individual, therefore it should not be competing against something in a different “genre” so to speak nor should it attempt to do so. RIM should, and is, sticking to what it does best; its just trying to find a balance between staying true to itself while keeping up with the changes in technology (IMO).

In response to Daniel C’s post, one has to ponder: if At&T gets the Odin, is it really a stupid decision? The reign of the iphone, as with all things, isn’t permanent; AT&T can’t rely on it forever. The phone’s aesthetic traits can only attract so many people – in the meantime, there are those who may not be satisfied with their service, iphone, etc, and are extremely tempted to switch to Verizon to get their hands on the 9500. Ultimately, this would cost AT&T customers and deal a blow to its reputation. Of course, one could get the Roger’s 9520 version when it’s released then proceed to unlock it in order to avoid cancelling their service with AT&T, but some people may not want to go through that process or lack the knowledge or willpower to do so (which is sad because there is a plethora of sources which describe the process). Anyways, if one were to switch their logic and choose to view the Odin as complementary to AT&T’s arsenal instead of the iphone’s killer, its acquisition would be a smart decision: 1. It appeals to a different, more business-oriented population being that it is a blackberry; the iphone is generally geared towards kids, adults who won’t grow up, and those who want more of a multimedia device 2. for those who currently have a blackberry but want a phone with killer specs and a touch screen with a familiar setup, the Odin is the way to go, 3. to reiterate, acquiring the Odin would increase At&T’s arsenal- it would help retain it’s business class while the iphone would do the same with the youth and multimedia focused class. There should be no competition between these two phones, they should work hand-in-hand towards strengthening At&T and it’s fan base.
