Google Sync struggling to push Gmail to iPhone?

By Will Park on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 12:54 PM PST In Rumors, iPhone, iPhone OS

iphone Google Sync struggling to push Gmail to iPhone?Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Sync recently rolled out support for push Gmail support on the iPhone. The iPhone community raised their hands in celebration and proceeded to flood Google’s Gmail servers with emails that were expected to push, in real-time, to the iPhone. But, going on comments left by users on Google’s blog and Twitter posts, some users are running into problems with Google Sync’s new push Gmail service. The Silicon Alley Insider posits that not even the mighty Google was prepared for the onslaught of iPhone traffic brought on by the launch of push Gmail. AT&T (NYSE: T), sure, but Google struggling under iPhone pressure? Color us surprised.

There are reports of emails not pushing, emails being delayed and email sync features not working correctly. I just tested my iPhone’s Gmail setup and I can say that emails were pushed to my push Gmail account with less than a five second delay. Google Sync seems to be working fine for me.

What say you, dear reader? Have you given the Google Sync service a go on your iPhone? How is push Gmail working?

If you still haven’t tried push Gmail on your iPhone, head on over to Google’s Google Sync page to learn more.

I synced up my iPhone the first week sync came out, and have never had a problem. Th only time anything had an issue was when I didn’t have a strong enough connection. Even the tags are there…I’ve added new contacts and use the calendar syncing part too… It’s all running just as big brother like as one would expect… Perfectly.

well, the push seems to be working for me also, however i did a test of 3 emails all at the same time and 2 came right through, the third took 11 minutes.

also i have been using gpush with sync and it works fine, i kinda got used to the notifications window that gpush supplies and a louder sound

yeh its not working for me, i just set it up and sent a few test emails from hotmail to my gmail. none of them pushed through and i had to go into my mail for it to pull them in.

so far no “push” for me

  4. JGN says:

I’ve been unable to sync the rest of my messages. Only the last 5 or 6 have come through.

I am having problems with push Gmail on my iPhone. It is saying I am having problems connecting to the server after already setting things up last night and have it all working fine. It stopped working from the looks of it around 10am earlier today MST.

I was excited to hear this on Tuesday, but was immediately disappointed. Push isn’t working for my Gmail account at all :/

  7. Method says:

    @peterg

You say push is working for you and 1 of 3 emails you sent to yourself showed up 11 minutes later? Huh??

  8. James says:

I left my old account on the iPhone just in case… luckily. It worked for about 8 seconds when I set it up mid day yesterday, then it stopped pushing. I went to remake the exchange account, and it started giving me server errors.

So I went back to my old method, tried again late thursday, and it worked okay, up until this morning, when trying to delete messages or get new ones, the mail app threw a myriad of different server inaccessible messages.

I’ve swapped back over to the old method again. Every 15 minutes is better than nothing at all.

  9. FlightNinja says:

I setup the sync yesterday and was thrilled that I could get my google calendar on my iPhone using iCal. Today though it stopped working around 10am or so. I was having problems with Gmail on the computer as well, so maybe it’s just a glitch.

  10. Shimmy says:

After having some initial issues, it seems to be working decently well. Emails will get pushed to the phone, with about a 5-15 second delay. Sometimes, however if I read something in the browser, it will not update as read on the phone.

  11. Swissbaglady says:

I get an error message telling me that the password is incorrect, yet I have checked it *1000* times and it is correct. Any suggestions (of the helpful variety :-) )

ever wondered if its not google thats the problem? i mean iphone cant even mms a message right? so think about the carrier…at&t got the bad end of the deal any problem with the iphone and they can just blame at&t and when there exclusivity runs out iphone will still sell meanwhile at&t’s reputation will be down the drain for not being able to handle all the iphone accounts.

  13. darwiniandude says:

It’s not AT&T… I’ve removed all accounts from my iPhone, then just added Gmail push. Doesn’t push. I’m in Australia, on WiFi, on the 28th. Come on Google. I have a few months before Mobile ME renewal, help me save some $$$. :)

  14. Motley says:

    It’s not working for me.

I remember at some stage after I set it up, it worked perfectly. Except now, maybe a week or so later, it won’t push. I’ve noticed that sometimes it will push, but much later than when the email was originally received.

I wouldn’t blame the carrier, as it’s still not pushing while I’m on WiFi and certain I have an internet connection.

I’d say that it’s got something to do with the Google Push Servers, perhaps they’re completely flooded with the amount of Gmail users and the information the server needs to hand out to every single iPhone.

  15. Chris says:

It’s a joke, right now. It worked fine for a while but now it’s regularly on a 2+ hour delay. In fact one day, my email never updated throughout the entire morning, afternoon, and evening. It’s completely useless.
