Brief: PTC launches HSPA+

By Ben Robinson on Monday, September 28th, 2009 at 12:20 AM PST In HSPA+

The network technology juggernaut that is HSPA+ continues it’s rollout…

This time it’s Polish Operator PTC (Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa) that has announced it’s HSPA+ upgrade programme, with a goal of boosting the network up to around 21Mbps, with uploads topping out at around 6Mbps. Of course, real-world speeds, including coverage and contention factors, could end up being a bit lower.
On a related note, right now I am struggling to see the need for 4G, if 3.5G technology can be deployed with good coverage and contention management – why deploy all-new network technology, when you can upgrade existing cell-sites, and continue backward compatibility with existing 3G devices? Why indeed….
