Nokia Messaging

The Nokia Messaging service is steadily getting some serious traction. Latest carrier to jump on board is Smart Communications in the Philippines, which started selling the Finnish giant’s service on September 26th.

The carrier offers Nokia Messaging with the Nokia E75 purchase and with the so called SMART Gold plan which costs P299 per month. Additionally, Smart wowed to offer the service on other Nokia smartphones in the near future, as well.

Again for those unfamiliar with Nokia Messaging, here’s an excerpt from the press release, explaining what it does:

Nokia Messaging mobilizes email from thousands of internet and email service providers globally. Customers can have their personal email accounts pushed directly to their Nokia device from email service providers such as Ovi, Yahoo!Mail, Gmail, and Windows Live Hotmail. Customers simply need to enter their email address and password to get emails pushed directly to the homescreen of their device. They can then read, send, forward and reply to emails as well as download, read, forward and attach files on the go. Small medium enterprises (SMEs) with their own POP/IMAP compliant email servers can also enjoy push email service with Nokia Messaging.

If you are thinking of subscribing to nokia messaging on smart you should be aware that the network is really poor (not to mention the customer service). I am in Manila and there is not a single day that the network does not go down. So many times i am in a chat and i lose the network for the rest of the day. So it’s not unlimited nokia messaging. It’s very limited by the fact that smart’s network is rubbish. When I called smart about this they said it’s normal as its a popular service. Crazy…you can’t charge people for an “unlimited” service if they cannot use it on an unlimited basis. Also note that when you email smart they take around 4 days to reply….awful phone company. The phone network is as bad as the data network – so many times people cannot call me cos the network just goes down.  If I try calling people its the same.  This happens for around 6 hours a day split over various times!  A third-world service at first word prices.
