South Africa’s Vodacom has teamed up with Tracker and Sierra Wireless to launch a vehicle tracking service in the country. Using the inSIM embedded technology developed by Wavecom (part of Sierra Wireless), interested users will be able track down vehicles on the carrier’s network.
Sierra Wireless’ inSIM is a solution which embeds the SIM function into the Wireless CPU at the component level, thus eliminating the use of the traditional plastic SIM cards. As a results, third parties will have harder time tampering with the SIM card.
Commenting on the announcement, Vodacom’s Wally Beelders said: “This is a revolutionary innovation and we’re excited to be the first network operator to have this product commercially available in South Africa. Tracker will also be the first vehicle tracking company to offer Sierra Wireless’ new technology as part of their tracking device.”
Finally, the carrier said its partnership with Sierra Wireless is just the beginning and that two parties plan to explore a variety of different machine-to-machine and telemetry solution options in the coming months, and eventually introduce new services to the end users.
