We did expect to see India moving the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) launch date and that’s happening now. The country’s Department of Telecom agreed to delay the launch to March 31st, after carriers said they were not ready with their networks.

Unlike the previous plan for a phased launch which should’ve started on January 1st, the new deadline means that MNP will be offered throughout the country on the same date.

An excerpt from the Ministry’s statement says: “A series of meetings were held by the Department of Telecom with the service providers concerned to assess their readiness for MNP service implementation. It was found that while some of the access (basic/mobile) and ILD service providers have technically upgraded and augmented their networks and some have established physical links with MNP operators, others are still in the process. All these being time-consuming processes, the service providers concerned are being given time by the DoT for various activities.”

Now I’m sure many Indian folks are hoping this time MNP will come on time. I’m also sure many of you are eager to change their operator. ;)
