Update: Paul from Skype dropped a quick note in the comments to let us know that this was, in fact, just a small glitch. If Skype for iPhone isn’t available yet in your area, check back soon.

Here’s an odd one. Chances are if you pack an iPhone you’ve already loaded up Skype, right? I know I have. It works well, and while there are shortcomings, it bridges the gap for me when i’m not in my office. Well, this morning it looks like something strange has happened. The Skype for iPhone app is now available in the US, or any of the other international App Stores. Hmmmmmm, ok WHAT?

You could chalk this one up to one of the following:

  1. This is a temporary glitch.
  2. Skype has a new version in the hopper. Perhaps an announcement at CES?
  3. Apple has a beef with Skype. They’ve punished Skype in preparation to announce a fancy new messenger service built-in to OS 4.0?
  4. I’m crazy and am on drugs.

Of course, points 1 and 4 would seem to be the path of least resistance, and I’m only speculating (just for fun) in points 2 and 3… But still, this kind of thing makes you think. Skype is no joke, and when it goes down like this in the App Store… One has to wonder what is going on behind the scenes.

So… The Skype for iPhone app is now available in the US?

    Hey James,

There’s no big story behind this, just a small glitch. We’ve now identified the fault which made Skype for iPhone unavailable to some people and a fix is underway.

We expect that the app will be fully available in the next few hours.
