RIM-GPS-security-settings

Here’s an interesting BlackBerry OS tidbit. How would you like it if your BlackBerry automatically changed security settings based on your current location? While in a secure location your security profile could be toned down… and when outside of a secure location your security profile could be beefed-up. Well, according to a patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, that’s exactly what RIM has in mind.

In the patent application named ‘Computing Device with Environment Aware Features’, RIM provides the following description:

A method and mobile electronic device are provided which automatically adjust settings based on the environment of the mobile electronic device. The settings of the mobile electronic device which are adjusted may be security settings, filter settings, or status for instant messaging in dependence on the determined location of the mobile electronic device.

Of course, this is all unconfirmed rumor at this point, so take it all with a grain of salt. That said, having location-based security built into the BlackBerry OS sounds like a potential win to me…and this could be just the tip of the iceberg. Changing your Messenger status, ringtone settings, and other profile level features based on location are just a few practical examples that come to mind. Your thoughts?
