STM32TS60

STMicroelectronics is introducing a new multi-touch resistive touchscreen controller chip – STM32TS60, which they say is the first member of ST’s new STMTouch family. The key selling points of the new multi-touch controller are: a) it detects up to ten simultaneous touches; b) it’s cheaper than a capacitive touchscreen controller.

The new chip combines the STM’s STM32 microcontroller architecture with PMatrix Multi-Touch technology from Stantum, a company which we’ve already covered in the past. It’s a single-core microcontroller, hence more affordable than some other multi-core processor or digital signal processors (DSPs).

Finally, the STM32TS60 is housed in a 7×7 mm 144-pin UFBGA package, and is now sampling to lead customers. Volume production is expected for Q2 2010. STMicroelectronics argues it’s suitable for use in handsets, notebook PCs, netbooks and MIDs…
