Nokia’s Research Center in Helsinki has invented mobile radar. Yes, you’ve heard that right. The same type of technology that submarines have and make Sean Connery in The Hunt for Red October an awesome Russian anti-hero. Jani Ollikainen, Ilari Teikari, Risto Kaunisto, Terhi Rautiainen have to be given credit here, their demo shows how one can increase the volume of music playing by simply waving your arm up and down like a mad man. Sure it’s easier to push a physical button, or drag a slider on a touch screen, but ignore the use case for a moment and just appreciate the technology demo.

They also measure the speed, and direction, of someone walking, and while it looks accurate in a controlled indoor environment, I wonder how it would perform on say the streets of London, New York or Berlin.

Anyway, enjoy this video because in an hour the internet is going to shit itself with Apple news:

i actually think this is kinda cool. could become very useful for hands free use, like driving, cooking, etc…, all times when you can’t reach out and press a button to answer a call, etc…

hopefully it doesn’t become vapor like other nokia research projects

This is pretty cool. More proof that Nokia innovate but apple actually put those innovations to good use. (see accelerometer, Haptikos and now Radar).

    Oh and NFC..

    God Nokia are so frustrating.
