OpenFeint, which is known as an iPhone’s social gaming network, is launching a dedicated website for its Free Game of the Day program that until now was available only inside the OpenFeint iPhone app.
Their idea is simple – there are more than 120,000 applications and games in the AppStore and users have hard time finding a title they (potentially) want. On the other hand, this huge number of available apps is also a problem for developers, which have hard time promoting their products. With FreeGameOfTheDay, game developers can offer one title for free for a limited time (usually one day) to get some traction among the users, who eventually could browse other titles from that developer and end up buying some other game.
That’s exactly the experience Origin8 had with the program. The company’s project manager David Manley said that during their February freebie promotion, they saw more than 1 million free units downloaded, with one product peaking at over 160K in one day. That led to sales of their other products, most impressively, Sentinel 2: Earth Defense, which sold fourfold compared to a similar period earlier in the month.
At the end of the press release, OpenFeint invites developers to consider applying for FreeGameoftheDay from here.
