Facebook Implementing QR Codes?

Facebook is apparently working on implementing QR (Quick Response) codes, potentially allowing you to view a profile, initiate a friend request, add someone to your address book, or view their latest status simply by scanning a 2D code with your smartphone’s camera. Scattered reports have seen links like the one above pop up and disappear, although the codes themselves don’t seem to work yet.

Two codes are clearly labeled here: “View QR Barcode” and “Generate status QR barcode”. I’m not sure exactly how helpful it would be to share or view a status update through the whole convulted process of pulling out your phone, launching the scanner app, taking the picture, and waiting for it to translate into something as mundane as “…is having a bath.” However, the “View QR Barcode” option could be handy if you want to add someone as a friend quickly, or transport them into your mobile’s address book without having to manually input all of the contact information.

Of course, the final implementation isn’t nailed down yet, and Facebook won’t even publicly acknowledge the feature, but be sure to keep an eye on your profiles in the next couple of days to see what rolls out.
