Nuance Communications released Nuance TALKS 5.0 for S60 5th edition touchscreen phones, bringing its assistive software that converts displayed text on a handset into speech to the platform.

The application/solution enables both blind and visually-impaired users to take full advantage of the many features found on S60 touchscreen smartphones, including the Nokia N97, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and others. Among the functions that are supported by Nuance TALKS 5.0 are contact directories, caller ID, text messaging, access to web browser, as well as third-party apps such as Fring. Best of all, the graphics user interface stays intact, leaving the original experience for each of the applications used.

The important feature of this release is the so called exploration mode that allows users to simply slide their finger across the screen to hear menus, applications, widgets, text, and more. Use of virtual keyboard is also included, and the software even takes advantage of the volume keys (located on the side of the device) for navigation.

Finally, in terms of localization, Nuance TALKS 5.0 supports more than 20 languages worldwide. And you can get additional information from Nuance’s website.
