SafeLink is “entering” the state of Maine, offering around 145,000 Maine residents its free cellular service. As you probably know, the powered-by-TracFone SafeLink provides low-income families with a free phone and a year’s worth of service — including 68 airtime minutes per month, unlimited access to emergency services, and services such as voicemail, text, call waiting, international calls and caller ID.
SafeLink gets its money from taxes on cell phone bills and from the Universal Service Fund.
We like SafeLink and what they do, and are always glad to give them some space on IntoMobile. In times we live in, it’s a necessity to own a mobile phone and with services like SafeLink’s, hopefully every single resident of the United States (and the rest of the world for that matter) will soon enough have a handset of its own. The next step should be to bring the mobile data services to low-income families and individuals, but that’s another story…
