Mint has gone Android! After launching its iPhone app, Mint.com is (as expected) extending its reach to the Android community with a new Mint app. The dedicated application allows Android smartphone owners to do the same things their iPhone counterparts could do: see real-time account balances, check recent transactions, compare spending against monthly budgets and edit transaction details. Mint connects with your bank accounts and credit cards to track your expenditures. It’s smart enough to know what kind of expense (food, gas, etc.) category each transaction belongs to, and automatically breaks down your finances in an easy-to-read interface.

Mint works as a budget manager, as well as a real-time banking alert system. By keeping track of your balance and your expenses, Mint knows when you’re running low on cash. The app will alert you when you’re at risk of breaking the bank, so that you won’t end up with costly overdraft fees.

In addition, there are few Android-specific features that further integrate Mint.com into the Android OS:

  • Search – you can search for and find recent transactions from the Android universal search.
  • Mint widget – get a snapshot of overall cash flow from the homescreen widget. No need to start up the app.
  • Android Live folders – for getting financial updates on the phone’s home screen without launching the Mint app. Especially helpful for low-balance warnings!

The security of your data remains very important for Mint, so if an Android phone is lost or stolen, users can immediately disable access from the Mint.com website. That’s important, because the app keeps track of your most personal financial data.

Mint for Android is readily available in the Android Market, supporting devices running Android 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.1. That pretty much means any Android user can download and use the new Mint app on their smartphone.
