The Samsung Galaxy phones are pretty darn cool but the next one – the Galaxy Q – will rock a full QWERTY keyboard and Samsung is going after business users who can’t go a day without their BlackBerry.
We’ve already seen shots of the Samsung Galaxy S Pro, which has a slide-out keyboard and will be the second Sprint smartphone to rock 4G data capabilities, but the Q should be a different beast.
“Galaxy Q – based on the Android mobile platform – will be all about providing simplicity in user experience, although it will still feature a full QWERTY keypad. The full touch-screen phone will also come with advanced social media features,” an industry source told the Korea Times. “The timing of the Galaxy Q launch hasn’t been fixed. Samsung still has things to negotiate with American carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless. However, the phone will be on American shelves by the end of year.”
It’s unclear what this device will be or what’s inside but it’s fair to speculate that is will share similar specs as the recently-announced Captivate on AT&T. I’d expect the company’s 1 GHz Hummingbird processor to power the Q and this is a powerhouse – it can pump out three times the raw graphical horsepower of the iPhone 3GS. Expect a 5-megapixel camera and WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G and other connectivity goodies.
It’s unclear if it will have that gorgeous Super AMOLED display (check out the video after the jump for an example of that drool-worthy screen), as that will depend on the form factor. If it’s a slider, then I’d expect that cool screen on it. Things are a bit dicey if they throw that keyboard on the face of the device.
Should RIM be worried about Samsung going after business customers? I do think they need a swift kick of innovation and the competition should help spur that. But RIM has the business space locked down thanks to its messaging and security features and I don’t expect that to go away any time soon.
