Yahoo! has just made a big mobile push in all directions today, announcing applications for Android to access Yahoo! Messenger and Mail, a home screen search widget, as well as HTML 5 compatibility for their e-mail and news sites, ensuring that those browsing from an iPhone won’t be stuck with a “download Flash, you knob” error message. Combined with the trickling-out of contact sync on BlackBerry, and replacing Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Maps, Yahoo! has made some pretty major product releases across all the major smartphone platforms in the last month or so.
The Yahoo! e-mail app includes support for attachments, rich text editing, drafts, folders, and a bunch of other standard features. It looks like the HTML 5 web-based equivalents offer the same functionality, and probably does just as well as a proper app if added to your iPhone’s home screen as a shortcut. The Yahoo! Messenger app includes notifications, connection to Windows Live contacts, and photo sharing.
