I just made a new best friend: it’s called BerryReader, which is an app for BlackBerry that just came out today and plugs right into Google Reader with full two-way sync. Read items match up, you can star stuff for later retrieval, change flags and tags, and even drop Likes on the good stories. The app is snappy, but still has a lot polish with stuff like smooth scrolling, and solid native integration with sensible keyboard shortcuts and notifications in Messages of new stories. Although I’m finding it has a few hiccups when trying to load a monstrous number of feeds, on the whole, I can’t remember a better RSS reader available on BlackBerry.
I used to use Viigo for reading RSS feeds, which was by and large nice, but quickly became bloated with a lot of extraneous features, and of the few that I used (like weather), I already had a dedicated app for. Viigo went off and got itself bought by RIM though, so I expect we’ll be seeing some new and tight native RSS integration with BlackBerry eventually.
Considering I spend the better part of my day in Google Reader, I consider BerryReader a must-have. If you do too, you’re in luck, because it’s half-off until Sunday (regularly $9.95). Just head over to the store and put in coupon code “berryreader50”. If you’re still hesitant, there’s a 7-day trial.
