A trio of BlackBerry OS 6 videos got out yesterday, showing off BlackBerry OS 6.0.0.100. We’ve already seen a lot of BlackBerry 6, both officially and otherwise, but nothing wrong with a little more eye candy, amirite? Take a look below before RIM gets them taken down from YouTube.
The OS is still very much a work in progress, seeing as the battery indicator and camera are a no-go, although App World and Facebook are working now. E-mails apparently have better HTML support, though we don’t get to see it in action. Messages of various types can now be distinguished by colors, which I think is new. You can also monitor which applications you’re using the most, and which are currently gobbling up app memory. Alongside the rumoured 512 MB of memory, I’m hoping the 9800 puts to rest the perpetual memory cleanup hourglass of yore. There’s one media app that looks altogether new called Web Video Search. It’s hard to tell if it’s an AT&T preload or something that’s coming with OS 6, but it looks like a great way to enjoy videos from YouTube and presumbly other video services. Finally, there’s a bunch of keyboard demos, showing the virtual keypad working in full QWERTY and SureType varieties, as well as options for QWERTZ and AZERTY variants.
The media walkthrough does little more than show us ringtones, movies, pictures, and YouTube on OS 6. I’m a little surprised that it doesn’t show pinch-zooming of pictures at some point, but hey, we’ve seen that before.
The Webkit browser video is mostly just running through the same Acid3 web standards test RIM showed off when they were introducing it. The reviewer puts both an older BlackBerry as well as the Bold/Torch 9800 slider through a few other tests, which further establishes the browsing in OS 6 to be a significant step up.
