HP is launching what seems as a very useful service for the emerging markets of the world. Called “SiteonMobile,” it allows users to view content of their favorite web pages in the form of text message or listen to that content as it’s being spoken on their phone.
I’m not sure this is the first web-to-SMS service, but it’s definitely HP’s first, so it deserves some attention.
The initial targeted market is India, where 54% of all phones sold are ultra low-end and in most cases (97%) can’t access Internet.
To take advantage of the service, users first need to enter their favorite web pages through a web interface and pack them as some sort of widgets. SiteonMobile takes care of the rest, bringing those newly created widgets to the users in the form of SMS, or voice in landline connections.
The great news is that SiteonMobile is a free service, but it may cost something (though remain cheap) after the project is fully updated…
