
Some of us may think WiMAX is slowly dying, but not Clearwire. As a matter of fact, the company has bought a 7% stake in Irish WiMAX operator, Imagine Communications, for 5 million EUR. That money also buys the U.S. based company a place in the board of directors.
As part of the deal, Clearwire will transfer a large part of its Irish infrastructure business and customer base to Imagine, driving the Irish company’s number of mast sites to 400.
Clearwire launched wireless broadband services in Ireland in 2005. In 2008, the Irish division generated a pre-tax loss of 13.4 million EUR on sales of 8.3 million EUR. In other words, a change was needed, badly.
