Last week, RIM kicked off a closed beta for BlackBerry Software 6.0, which will be the PC counterpart to their brand new handheld operating system. Some enterprising haxxorz have freed the Desktop Software from its NDA-bound prison, and are now sharing it with the world – go ahead and get downloading at any of the links below.
By and large, the new app does most of the same stuff as the current Desktop Manager: sync contacts, calendars, and media, backup and restore, media sync, load applications, and initiate tethering. The one thing I had noticed from the screenshots was that you could sync up with web services too, like Yahoo!.
What is especially interesting about this leak is that the included graphics files show a device we’ve seen relatively little of, the BlackBerry 8980, better known as Atlas. All we really know about it is that it will be dual-mode CDMA/GSM, but it seems to be a likely candidate for some OS 6 lovin’. Perhaps it’ll be a Verizon version of the 9780? We’ll probably find out soon enough, as OS 6 has been promised to us this summer, and we’re already closing in on August.
