As expected, Preparing for the back-to-school rush, Telus has announced the INQ Chat 3G. This is a BREW-based handset that has already made the rounds in the UK, and is finally working its way over to North America. Its seemingly singular function is to get connected with online social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live Messenger, and Skype. On top of all that, there are home screen widgets to keep tabs on regular updates.

As far as hard specs go, the INQ Chat 3G has 3G, GPS (no Wi-Fi, sadly), Bluetooth, a 2.8″ QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, and it supports data tethering. It’s just too bad Telus didn’t hold out for an Android device from INQ, but who knows, maybe we’ll see one in time for the holidays.

The INQ Chat 3G seems like a good option for those who might consider a BlackBerry for efficient messaging, but would rather skip the stuffy interface for something a little more colourful (although possibly a bit less robust). You can pick up the INQ Chat 3G at Telus for free on a two- or three-year contract, or $179.99 with no strings attached. Head on over here for our hands-on video of the hardware and software.

If the Kin Bombed, and that was a pretty great social networking phone, this is going to bomb just the same. In the US, until Apple is brought down, either by hackers infesting the net they way they do Windows and Windows Mobile, nothing is going to bring down the iPhone and Apples sheepish users that will buy any piece of crap they sell. Even if it doesn't really work well, just has the logo on it. Sad state of affairs but that is America, full of the easiest push overs in the world.

Just picked up my INQ Chat 3G and its recognized by my new Ford Sync system but I can’t download the phone book and the text service is not supported.

My old LG phone at least permitted me the availability to make hands free calls.

So its going back to the store where I got it. Not much use if I have to worry about stopping to make calls every 20 minutes or so with a SYNC system in my car.
