
Few days ago we wrote that Imagine Communications has sold a piece of its company to Clearwire. Apparently, we didn’t know the whole story. Now we have the official press release from where we learn that it was actually Imagine who both Clearwire’s assets in Ireland in a move that turned the U.S. company into a minority shareholder of Imagine and while ensuring them [Clearwire] a place in the board of directors.
Imagine, on its end, is in the mids of a 100 million EUR roll-out of the WiMAX network in Ireland and this latest move is seen as part of that strategy. After the acquisition, they [Imagine] has nearly 400 high sites nationwide.
Back in 2008, Imagine gained 50mHz of Irish Broadband spectrum. Afterwards, it added more spectrum in a Comreg process in 2009, and with Clearwire Ireland’s spectrum now has over 120mHz of crucial 3.4/3.6mHz spectrum. The company expects that the WiMax network will cover 90% of Ireland within two years.
